Harvesting and   Collection:

Collect in late   autumn when the stem and leaves begin to wither, or in early spring of next   year before the plant begins to sprout.

Quality:

The sample with   yellowish-brown surface, obvious cloudy grains and stars in section, heavy weight,   hard texture, oleaginous, aromatic, bitter and not astringent taste, sticky   when chewing is the best.

Nature, Taste and   Meridian attribution:

Bitter in taste.   cold in nature. The spleen, stomach. Large intestine, liver and heart   meridians in attribution.

Functions:

Purge fire, clear   heat, remove toxic substances, activate blood circulation and remove blood stasis,   eliminate dampness and

reduce jaundice.

Usage and Dosage:

5-20g for decoction(not   decocted for a long time and decocted later); half dosage as powder.   Appropriate dosage for external use.

Precaution:

1. Contraindicated   for cases with weakness of spleen and stomach due to its heavy bitter taste and   cold nature.

2. Contraindicated   for women in pregnancy, menstruation and lactation periods.

3. Contraindicated   for cases with deficiency of qi and blood and

without stagnation   or blood-stasis.

4. Contraindicated   for insufficiency of healthy qi in case of yin phlegmon or carbuncle with   clear discharge after rupture.

Activating ingredients:  

It include anthraquinones.   The conjugated anthraquinones are anthracene glycosides, namely the   combinations of free anthraquinones with glucose. They occur in the forms of   physcionmonoglucoside, aloe emodin monoglucoside aloeemo-din-1-0β-D-   glucopy-ranoside), emodin monoglucoside, chrysophanol monoglucoside,   chrysophanol-HO-BD- glucopyranoside, rhein monoglucoside and rheinoside-A,B, C,   D. The free anthraquinones present only in small amounts but possess a   powerful effect. Free anthraquinones mainly include rhein, chrysophanol   (Xxi), emodin, aloe-emodin and Anthrones(EE) are the reduction products of   anthraquinones. These anthrones occur in the

form of Theidin   A,B,C, paladin A,B,C, and sennoside-a, B, C, D, E, F. Crude Da huang has a   high content of tannin, in the form of gallic acid and catechins. In   addition, polysaccharides, stilbenes, butyrophenone.

Processing Methods   and Functions:

1.     Raw   Radix et Rhizoma Rhei

Method: It should   be purified, distinguished according to size rashed clean, and taken out from   water. The drugs would then be cut into chunks after they are softened by sprinkling,   exposed in the air so as to become dry or made dry with low heat.

Function: It has   strong effect of diarrhea. It has the effect of counteracting stagnation and   purging fire to remove toxin. For example, it can be used in Dachengqi   Decoc-tion.

2.     Stir-frying   Radix et Rhizoma Rhei

Method: With wine   Spray some yellow wine evenly on the drugs, mix them thoroughly and cover   closely to make the drugs moistened. After the wine is absorbed thoroughly,   put the drugs into a frying container and fry them with mild fire to become dry.   The amount should be 10kg wine per 100kg drugs.

Function: Stir   -fried with wine It can moderate the bitter flavor, cold nature and the   effect of drastic purgation. It can clear away heat-toxicity in blood system   in upper energizer, and strengthen the effect of promoting blood flow to   remove blood stasis. For example, it can be used in Danggui Luhui Pill which   is suitable for conjunctival congestion and pyogenic Shangqing Pill which is   suitable for oral ulceration; and the Xiayuxue Decoction which is suitable for   stagnant blood.

3.     Steaming   Radix et Rhizoma Rhei

Method: With wine   It is to mix the raw drugs evenly with some wine, moistening the drugs until   the wine is absorbed completely. Then steam the drugs in a container till   they become pitchy color both outside and inside. The amount should be 30kg   wine per 100kg drugs.

Function: Radix et   Rhizoma Rhei steamed with wine It can moderate the effect of purgation and   has the functions of purging heat and dissipating dampness. And at the same   time it strengthens the effect of promoting circulation for removing blood   stasis. For example, it can be used in Dahuang Pill which is suitable for   dryness of intestine and constipation; and Runchang Pill which is suitable   for old people and children to loose bowel to relieve constipation.

4.     Stir-frying   Radix et Rhizoma Rhei

Method: With   vinegar It is to mix the raw drugs evenly with some vinegar, moistening the   drugs until the vinegar is absorbed completely. Then put the drugs into a   frying container, fry them quickly with mild fire until the drugs become dry,   and then take the drugs out of the container. The amount should be 15kg   vinegar per 100kg drugs.

Function: Its main   functions are removing food retention and blood stasis.

5.     Charring   Radix et Rhizoma Rhei

Method: It is to   put the raw drugs into a frying container, fry them with strong fire until   the drugs outer part become black, and then take them out of the container.

Function: It has   the minimum effect of diarrhea. But it can cool the blood to remove blood   stasis and has the function of hemostasis. For example, it can be used in   Shihui Powder which is suitable for bleeding in stools because of retention   at large intestines and hemoptysis due to pathogenic fire

6.     Qingning   Pill

Method: It is   processed by adding several different adjuvant materials, with complicated   processing technology.

Function: It has   the effect of lubricant purgation and can be used for habit constipation of   old people.

Description:

Harvested in   October to November, in order to make the root dry enough, it is generally   smoke-dried, to contain a lot of sulfur.
